Alpena, Michigan-based Amos Mfg. Inc. and Gloyd Recycling Solutions LLC (GRS) have announced a collaborative effort to bring technology called the Battery-In-Device-Shredder system (BIDS23) into production.

According to the companies, the system is integral to improving safety and reducing manual battery removal from small electronic devices by directly processing batteries that can present a fire hazard in recycling and solid waste settings.

Amos Mfg. is affiliated with shredding equipment producer Ameri-Shred, also based in Alpena. GRS, based in Texas, provides guidance to recycling companies, including facility design and operation.

The BIDS23 initially was developed by GRS along with input from Canada-based Archimedes Industry Advisory and Investments (AIAI). The device is designed to stave off thermal incidents that can lead to fires and operational downtime without the need for manual battery removal.

“These issues have been particularly problematic in warehouse environments, where they can lead to substantial financial and safety risks,” Amos Mfg. says.

Amos calls the manual removal and sorting of smaller batteries “inefficient and hazardous,” and says the BIDS23 system provides a comprehensive solution to these problems by effectively and safely processing batteries in devices.

Built by Amos Mfg, the system “adheres to the highest standards of durability and reliability,” the company says. The BIDS23 features a compact design that allows for seamless integration into existing warehouse operations, while its advanced wet scrubber technology and closed loop water systems addresses environmental compliance concerns.
