Winters Bros. Waste Systems, a Long Island, New York-based independent hauler that provides solid waste management and recycling services to municipal, residential, commercial and industrial customers in Long Island, has merged with WM.
“This acquisition will grow WM’s footprint and add complementary assets and operations, as well as a team with a shared focus on safety, outstanding service and operational excellence,” WM says.
The transaction was completed July 15. Terms of the deal were not announced.
The transaction includes all of Winters Bros.’ hauling operations, long-haul logistics and 12 transfer stations and recycling operations on Long Island. The merger strengthens WM’s national service platform and integrates Winters Bros.’ collection, transfer and recycling operations, Winters Bros. says in a news release.
Winters Bros. runs about 275 trucks with about 525 employees. Its service area includes Nassau and Suffolk counties and New York City.

“Our two companies have known and respected each other for many years, and the time is right for us to take the next logical step in our evolution, allowing us to accelerate the applications of technology to enhance services on Long Island,” Winters Bros Chair and CEO Sean Winters says. “WM has an extensive presence across the United States and there are opportunities to internalize significant volumes of waste while ensuring environmentally sound solutions for customers on Long Island. Winters Bros. developed a broad regional footprint across Long Island over the past 11 years.”
The combination of Winters’ Bros. and Houston-based WM creates an integrated operations platform that provides significant advantages for serving customers across Long Island, Winter Bros. says. WM will focus on centralizing core corporate functions and standardizing business practices, creating operating efficiencies and improving productivity, while customer decisions will remain at the local level to ensure Winter Bros. remains responsive to customer and municipal concerns.
“By building on the best practices of both companies, we can further improve productivity and operating margins while advancing our strategic priorities and investing in the ongoing development of our business and critical people resources,” Winters Bros Executive Vice President Jimmy Winters says. “This merger allows us to capitalize on the attractive business opportunities on Long Island and enhance our ability to provide comprehensive solutions to the waste-stream management needs of our customers.”
“As each company has done individually, the combined company will remain fully committed to serving the needs of our customers, municipalities and employees," adds Will Flowers, senior vice president at Winter Bros. The vertically integrated model of the combined company—linking collection, transfer, recycling and disposal services—results in a resilient solid waste system that is needed for Long Island. Additionally, our employees will benefit from enhanced career opportunities that result from a larger company positioned for future success.”
