Waste Management, Houston, has been ordered to pay $4.1 million in a federal class-action lawsuit stemming from odor emissions at the Stony Hollow Landfill in Dayton, Ohio, the Dayton Daily News reports.
The suit was filed in 2016 over odor complaints from residents in Jefferson Township, Kettering, Miamisburg, Moraine, Oakwood and places located even further from the Waste Management-owned landfill.
Waste Management will have to pay $1.875 million to the 2,000-plus people who signed up as class-action members. The settlement also requires the landfill to invest $1.45 million at the facility “to reduce the potential for odor emissions,” Dayton Daily News reports.
The news outlet also says that attorney fees totaled more than $793,000.
The settlement received preliminary approval in July, and final approval was ordered by U.S. District Judge Thomas M. Rose in late November.
