Kittitas County Solid Waste in Washington has broken ground on its new Lower County Transfer Station.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place Sept. 30 at the project site in Ellensburg, Washington. The 39-acre site will have a 26,000-square-foot transfer station building that is designed to meet all regulatory requirements for municipal waste disposal, the department says.

The transfer station site also will include a composting operation, a moderate-risk waste facility and a recycling depot. With an estimated cost of $20 million, funded by loans and grants through the county’s public works trust fund, Kittitas County Solid Waste says the project will modernize waste disposal and support the county’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
Site selection for the project began in 2017. Phase 1 of the project, consisting of utility work, began in May 2021. The new transfer station, expected to be completed by January 2026, will provide increased capacity and streamlined services for the community.
