Volpatt Construction, a Pittsburgh-based general contractor and construction management firm, has released its midyear waste diversion data for 2025.

From January to June, the company—together with its local partners—successfully diverted 260 tons of construction and demolition (C&D) waste from landfills.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Waste Reduction Model (WARM), diverting 260 tons of waste from landfills avoids the release of approximately 245 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) emissions.

“These figures underscore the significant environmental value of waste diversion efforts,” says Michael Volpatt, vice president of marketing and innovation at Volpatt Construction. “If the entire industry—from owners and architects to contractors and subcontractors—prioritized waste diversion before the shovel hits the dirt, we could position our region as a national leader in green construction.”

Volpatt encourages the adoption of the following best practices in waste diversion:

  • Reducing sources to minimize material use, energy consumption and waste generation;
  • Salvaging with the goal of reusing C&D materials;
  • Donating surplus materials, including furniture, fixtures and equipment;
  • Purchasing reclaimed or recycled-content materials for use in new projects; and
  • Sending waste to a materials recycling facility that receives, sorts and processes recyclable C&D materials.

Volpatt’s key waste diversion partners include Etna Center for Community, local universities and museums, Michael Brothers, Boyd Roll Off, Construction Junction, Doors Unhinged and Habitat for Humanity ReStore, among others. The company says it is actively expanding its network of collaborators to drive broader adoption of environmentally responsible practices across the industry.

Volpatt Construction is a family-owned commercial and industrial construction firm serving western Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Since its first project at the University of Pittsburgh in 1991, the company has completed more than 900 projects across the region.
