Dutch waste and recycling collection vehicle manufacturer VDL Translift says its new Vorax rear-loader model is being produced at its manufacturing facility in Dronten, Netherlands.

The company, which also makes side-loader models for residential and commercial haulers, says it has designed the Vorax to fill a niche in the rear-loader market for commercial and industrial hauling firms.

A key advantage of the Vorax is the swing link design of its packing mechanism which, according to VDL, ensures reduced maintenance costs compared with the traditional slide block compaction mechanisms offered by its competitors.

The company says its swing link design also directs more compaction force into the load, helping it carry a high payload.

“When the packer blade is cycled, the minimum amount of hydraulic oil needed to compress the waste is provided by the equipment’s hydraulics, which is yet another advantage,” VDL says, noting a “limited number of moving parts” also reduces the risk of the equipment needing either major repair or refurbishment.

Inside the cab, the unit’s operating controls "have been designed with the operator in mind” and to enhance the truck’s performance.

The first Vorax unit assembled has been shipped to Netherlands-based truck sales and rental firm Cleanmat and units have been ordered by Germany-based PreZero International and United Kingdom-based Renewi plc.

According to VDL, 10 Vorax units have been sold—two to Cleanmat, two to PreZero and six to Renewi.

Models are available with either traditional comb/trunnions lifters or a Bammens lifting device designed to handle containers of up to 1,600 liters (422 gallons) in capacity. Vorax models also have the option of being fitted with a roof-mounted crane for underground materials collection.
