Two Brothers drive nets 3.5 tons of e-scrap

Farmingdale, New York-based Two Brothers Scrap Metal says a drive it conducted in cooperation with an area middle school has resulted in the collection of 7,160 pounds (more than 3.5 tons) of electronic scrap.

Two Brothers donated the use of a rolloff container for Mineola (New York) Middle School’s electronic scrap collection drive, held April 23, in celebration of Earth Day weekend. Residents came to the school to drop off their unwanted and unused computers, hard drives, printers, flat-screen TVs, chargers and other items, according to Two Brothers.

Two Brothers has participated in the obsolete electronics collection drive for the past five years. During that time, the company has hauled away 38,000 pounds — more than 17 tons — of electronic scrap.

“The purpose of the drive was to help the environment by disposing of electronics that are either no longer being used or do not work anymore; recycling electronic waste keeps it from winding up in landfills.

 The event began as a project initiated by the school’s Robotics Club. Since then, the Robotics Club has teamed up with the school’s Environmental Club to promote the drive to the local community. Last year’s drive was canceled due to COVID-19 and rescheduled for this year to coincide with Earth Day weekend, says Two Brothers, which collects a variety of nonferrous and ferrous metals at its Farmingdale location.
