Phoenix-based Republic Services has broken ground on a renewable natural gas (RNG) site at Middle Point Landfill, Murfreesboro, Tennessee, that will capture landfill gases and repurpose them into pipeline-quality RNG, reports WGNS Radio.
The site is expected to be in service by the fourth quarter of 2024, and to provide energy to more than 80,000 homes annually. The RNG site is a joint venture with Archaea Energy, a BP company that is one of the largest RNG producers in the U.S., and it will be connected to an Atmos Energy pipeline. The cost for the project is estimated at $70 million.

“The RNG facility at Middle Point is something we see as a promise kept to the members of this committee,” Middle Point Landfill General Manager Mike Classen says. “You asked for us to incorporate sustainability and green energy projects into our operations at Middle Point, and we have delivered.
Additional investments include $11 million in on-site gas collection and control; an odor-monitoring system and dedicated cleanup of adjacent streets.
