Sparq Renewables, based in Oklahoma City, the city of Enid, Oklahoma, and NextEra Energy Resources LLC, based in Juno Beach, Florida, have announced the groundbreaking of the Scissortail Renewables project, a renewable natural gas (RNG) plant that will convert methane from municipal waste into renewable energy for Enid residents. The facility will be located at the Enid City Landfill.

Scissortail Renewables says the project is the first municipally owned landfill in Oklahoma to produce pipeline-quality RNG.

“The Scissortail Renewables project is a milestone for Enid,” Enid Mayor David Mason says. “We are proud to be the first municipality in Oklahoma to use a city-owned landfill to capture gas and turn it into a renewable source of energy for its residents.”

Landfill gas (LFG) is comprised of methane generated through the decomposition of waste and, if released into the atmosphere, is a potent greenhouse gas. Scissortail Renewables says the project will improve air quality near the facility by reducing methane emissions.

“Sparq’s vision is to harness the state’s many renewable resources, including landfill gas, to create a more sustainable and cleaner Oklahoma,” Sparq Renewables CEO Norman Herrera says. “Naturally occurring methane from household trash is one source we believe is significantly underutilized in the state, and we appreciate the opportunity to help contribute toward meaningful environmental change through the creation of Scissortail Renewables.”

Once operational, Scissortail’s gas collection and processing facility will inject gas into the existing Oneok pipeline to deliver RNG to consumers to heat homes and fuel businesses.

“This facility is an investment in the future of Enid, creating jobs and economic opportunities for our citizens,” Mason says.
