The city of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, received a $296,000 grant from The Recycling Partnership, Falls Church, Virginia, to help the city transition from a bagged recycling system to an automated cart system in October 2019. Through the grant, the city reports that it used the funds to purchase carts for its community. The city received 36,500 carts for its recycling program this week and plans to deliver the carts to residents’ homes in April.
“It will take approximately three weeks to deliver all the carts,” the Sheboygan Department of Public Works shared in a statement on its website.
Once all the carts are delivered, the city aims to launch the cart system May 4.
The Sheboygan Department of Public Works reports that crews delivering the carts are taking precautions while assembling the carts and delivering them because of COVID-19. The city has asked that residents handle the new carts like other packages being delivered to their homes.
“The safety of our employees and especially our sanitation workers during this time is of great importance,” the Sheboygan Department of Public Works states. “The new system will significantly reduce the number of times our employees have to touch with their hands the garbage and recycling. The reduction of manually handling trash and recycling played an essential role in our decisions to continue with the delivery of the new garbage and recycling carts.”
