Republic Services of Denver celebrated the launch of its all-electric waste and recycling collection truck fleet in Louisville, Colorado, which began operating Oct. 1.

According to a news release from Phoenix-based Republic Services, the city of Louisville has made history as the first city in the U.S. to adopt an all-electric collection fleet.

“At Republic Services, our vision is to partner with customers to create a more sustainable world,” Mountain West Area President Bryant Thornton says. “That includes our commitment to fleet electrification, which is reducing our own carbon footprint while supporting climate action in the communities we serve. We applaud the city of Louisville for being true leaders in sustainability.”

The fleet includes three Volterra ZSLs from Dodge City, Minnesota-based McNeilus and a 520EV rear loader for alley service from Denton, Texas-based manufacturer Peterbilt. The McNeilus Volterra was developed with insights from Republic and the company says it is equipped with the latest safety technology, including 360-degree cameras, an enlarged windshield for improved visibility, lane-departure sensors and automated braking.

Republic says it operates the largest electric collection fleet in North America, and by the end of this year, expects to be operating more than 50 EVs across the U.S. as research vehicles or in partnership with other “forward-thinking municipalities.” The company recently announced an order for 100 additional McNeilus Volterras for delivery in 2025.

By 2028, Republic expects half its new truck purchases will be EVs.
