McNeilus Truck and Manufacturing Inc., Dodge Center, Minnesota, says it has sold two McNeilus Volterra ZSL electric refuse and recycling collection vehicles (eRCVs) to a long-time customer in Oregon.

According to McNeilus, Sherwood, Oregon-based Pride Disposal & Recycling Co. will take delivery of the eRCVs as a “step forward in Pride Disposal’s sustainability efforts and commitment to advanced technology.”

The truck maker refers to Pride Dipsosal as “a longstanding user of McNeilus trucks,” and says the firm selected the Volterra model “to meet the unique demands of their diverse service area, which includes both urban neighborhoods and rural communities.”

Continues McNeilus, “With varying elevations and some routes requiring a 30-minute drive from their facility, Pride Disposal needed a solution that could handle the geographic challenges while maintaining sufficient battery life. Following a successful demonstration in which the Volterra ZSL EV performed flawlessly across all service areas, the company chose to integrate two EVs into its fleet.”

“We’ve relied on McNeilus trucks for years because of their reliability and high quality, and the Volterra ZSL eRCV was the first electric vehicle that we felt could truly meet all of our needs,” says Kristin Leichner, president of Pride Disposal & Recycling.

“After demoing the truck, our drivers were impressed not only with its range and performance but also with its advanced technology,” says Leichner. “We’re looking forward to controlling emissions and enhancing the efficiency of our operations while providing clean, quiet service for the communities we serve.”

McNeilus describes the Volterra ZSL eRCV as a “purpose built, fully integrated electric refuse and recycling collection vehicle designed to deliver exceptional performance while supporting sustainability goals.”

Other features of the model include a 360-degree camera system, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warnings and what the truck maker calls “advanced emergency braking.” The eRCVs also feature a 15-inch touchscreen display and 12-inch digital “cluster” that McNeilus says streamlines controls “for a more intuitive driving experience.”

“By incorporating advanced technology features, a reduced total cost of ownership and zero emissions, the Volterra ZSL eRCV represents a no-compromise solution for refuse and recycling collection in even the most challenging service areas,” says Lee Dreas, vice president and general manager of McNeilus.

The Volterra ZSL eRCVs to be deployed in Oregon will be produced at McNeilus’ new manufacturing facility in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, while the compaction assemblies are built at the company’s headquarters plant in Minnesota.

The truck maker says the Volterra is “designed to meet stringent environmental regulations,” and that the model holds zero-emission certifications from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (CARB).
