Galveston Island Park Board of Trustees joins Cyclyx to expand plastic collection efforts

A 10to90 program will create circularity for postuse plastic on the island, Cyclyx says.

Portsmouth, New Hampshire-based Cyclyx International LLC., a postuse plastic innovation company, has announced the Galveston Island Park Board of Trustees, Galveston, Texas, has joined the consortium. 

In 2022, the board’s Coastal Zone Management crews worked to remove more than 2.5 million pounds of materials left behind by beachgoers. Kimberly Danesi, interim CEO of the park board, says plastics account for approximately 50 percent of these materials.  

“We recognize the potential to recycle more plastic that our Coastal Zone Management crews collect from Galveston beaches, and we are excited about the opportunity to work with Cyclyx to reach that goal,” Danesi says. 

The Galveston Island Park Board of Trustees and Cyclyx will create opportunities for sustainability and circularity for end-of-life plastic collected on the island through the implementation of a customized 10to90 program, the mission brand of Cyclyx, the company says. 10to90 will work to enhance the Galveston Island Park board’s recycling advocacy programming for visitors and residents, including Beach Toy Borrow Boxes on the sand and the Up2U Free Trash Bag Program

“Our unique collection programs provide more accessibility for individuals to participate in recycling plastic waste,” Bill Cooper, senior vice president of corporate strategy and development for Cyclyx, says. 

“The park board’s membership in the Cyclyx consortium will assist in amplifying our operational recycling capabilities and encourage recycling advocacy in the Galveston community,” Danesi says.  

Houston was the first Texas city to launch a 10to90 program with Cyclyx. The 10to90 program refers to Cyclyx’ goal of increasing the recyclability of plastic from 10 percent to 90 percent.
