Enerkem Inc. and Technip Energies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enter into a collaboration agreement aimed at accelerating the deployment of Enerkem's technology platform for biofuels and circular chemical products from non-recyclable waste materials.
Enerkem, based in Montreal, has one plant operating in Alberta and two projects in the construction phase: one in Quebec and the other in Spain. In Alberta, the firm’s plant has been designed to accept difficult to recycle materials from the municipal solid waste (MSW) stream and convert them into advanced bio-methanol and circular methanol.
The collaboration with Technip Energies, headquartered in France, seems designed to allow Enerkem to ramp up the number of projects it can bid on and accept, since Technip operates in 35 countries with some 15,000 employees.
To also help expedite the deployment of its technology, Enerkem says it intends to establish a development company commissioned to acquire sites and secure relevant permits to host what it calls its biorefineries.
“We are excited to partner with Technip Energies to accelerate the deployment of Enerkem’s technology in Europe, North America and the Middle East,” Enerkem CEO Dominique Boies says. “Technip Energies’ extensive expertise will enable Enerkem’s clients to benefit from projects’ speed to market and cost efficiencies, supporting their decarbonization efforts and sustainability goals.”
“We are pleased to join forces with Enerkem on the deployment of its technology platform to convert waste into sustainable and valuable end products such as biofuels," says Bhaskar Patel, senior vice president at Technip Energies. By leveraging our expertise in engineering, sustainable chemistry and biofuels projects, we will support project execution and Enerkem’s technology deployment.”
