Connecticut landfill will gain solar panel array

Hamden, Connecticut, planning commission approves array of 4,000 solar panels.

The planning commission of Hamden, Connecticut, has approved a proposal to install solar panels atop the town’s landfill.

An online article by the New Haven Register says 4,000 panels will be installed in a 4.5-acre area occupied by the town’s landfill and transfer station.

The solar project will reportedly be undertaken by True Green Capital Solar Generation IV, a subsidiary of True Green Capital (TGC), Westport, Connecticut.

As portrayed in the Register article, the panels will generate solar power that will save the town of Hamden at least $600,000 over the span of a 20-year contract.

A TGC representative quoted by the Register says the installation will occur relatively quickly. After the 20 year period ends, TGC will be responsible for removing the panels, by which time they will be “obsolete, as technology is constantly improving” in the solar sector, according to the TGC spokesperson.

Before the installation takes place, the project will also need to be approved by Hamden’s legislative council and the Connecticut Departments of Energy and Environmental Protection.
