William Gerber Inc. of Cockeysville, Maryland, operating as Gerber’s Refuse, has been acquired by Casella Waste Systems Inc., headquartered in Rutland, Vermont, according to SC&H Capital, an investment bank specializing in M&A advisory for middle-market companies, which advised the seller.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Gerber’s is a third-generation commercial waste hauler serving clients across Baltimore County. For the past 85 years, the company has provided waste collection services to businesses across the manufacturing, industrial, retail, commercial office, restaurant and construction industries, as well as multifamily residences.

Mike Geber and Patty Gerber-Mason had worked in the family business with their father, William Gerber, since the 1980s. After taking leadership of the company in 2015, the siblings continued the successes of their grandfather and father.

The transaction provides Gerber’s with a culturally aligned partner to continue serving the Baltimore County community and expands Casella’s waste collection capabilities in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Casella Waste Systems posted revenue of $417.1 million for the first quarter of 2025, up $76.1 million, or 22.3 percent, from the same period in 2024. The company attributed its revenue growth in part to the rollover impact from acquisitions.

“Acquisitions remain a key strategic priority, and year to date we have acquired four businesses with approximately $50 million in annualized revenue, including a recent tuck-in in the western New York market,” John W. Casella, chairman and CEO of the company, says in a news release announcing its quarterly financials. “We continue to work a robust deal pipeline, including both geographic overlays and strategic adjacencies, that we hope will drive further value creation in the future.”

“SC&H Capital was proud to work with the Gerber family on finding the right partner for its commercial refuse business that carries on the legacy their family built as a trusted waste management provider to businesses across Baltimore,” says Matt Everett, principal at SC&H Capital, which has multiple locations in the Mid-Atlantic region as well as in Chicago. “The Gerbers have built on their family’s great reputation and served the Baltimore business community exceptionally well.”

“Matt and the SC&H Capital team provided insightful advice throughout the process,” Gerber President Mike Gerber says. “The SC&H team worked tirelessly to provide the Gerber family with the best possible options for my family’s goals.”

Everett at SC&H Capital led the transaction, with Mark Jensen of Jensen & McComas serving as legal counsel.
