Consortium launches closed-loop PFAS solution

Heritage-Crystal Clean, a Hoffman Estates, Illinois-based environmental services provider, has formed a partnership with Allonnia, Revive Environmental and Epoc Enviro to launch 4never. The partners say 4never is a closed-loop per- and poly-fluoroalkyl (PFAS) remediation solution for the landfill and industrial waste management markets.

“The 4never solution offers landfill operators and manufacturers a cost-effective and compliant approach to managing PFAS-contaminated leachate and wastewaters,” says Heritage-Crystal Clean President and CEO Brian Recatto.

According to a Crystal Clean news release, 4never unites the PFAS remediation steps of separation, concentration, transportation and destruction to provide a solution for landfill operators and the industrial market.

The solution combines Surface Active Foam Fractionation (SAFF) technology, exclusively distributed by Boston-based Allonnia and manufactured by Epoc Enviro, an environmental engineering firm based in North Carolina, with Columbus, Ohio-based Revive Environmental’s PFAS Annihilator to provide a complete PFAS elimination process, the companies say.

Heritage-Crystal Clean is the exclusive distributor and operator of the solution to the private landfill and industrial waste treatment markets, serving clients through its nationwide network of branches and waste treatment facilities.

“Allonnia is proud to work with Crystal Clean and our technology partners, combining SAFF and PFAS Annihilator to create a solution for the North American market that permanently destroys what has been labeled a forever chemical,” Allonnia CEO Nicole Richards says. “It is impressive how the landfill market has embraced the PFAS removal challenge, and it’s been incredible to work with other innovators passionate about solving our most challenging environmental problems.”

The consortium says 4never helps landfill operators and manufacturers improve their sustainability footprint by removing and destroying PFAS before discharging contaminated groundwater to their local municipal wastewater treatment systems.

The hub-and-spoke model begins with the SAFF unit at the generating source. Crystal Clean will provide, operate and service the SAFF unit, which separates and concentrates PFAS contaminants from waste streams.

The company will then transport the separated PFAS hyper-concentrate to one of its wastewater treatment facilities, where Revive Environmental’s PFAS Annihilator unit will destroy the PFAS.

“Revive Environmental is excited to bring its patented, enabling technology to this partnership,” Revive Environmental President and CEO David Trueba says. “The PFAS Annihilator is the culmination of years of development and the leading way to destroy PFAS with the confidence that can only be realized through world-class scientific research.”

Heritage-Crystal Clean also will implement the SAFF technology at its own commercial wastewater treatment facilities to further concentrate other PFAS-contaminated waste streams before destruction using the PFAS Annihilator.

Heritage-Crystal Clean says the solution will be offered by the consortium as a service, where customers will pay a fixed cost per gallon.

Power Knot biodigester combines with Meiko transport system

Power Knot LLC, a Fremont, California-based provider of on-site organic waste management solutions, has announced the successful integration of its LFC biodigester with a Meiko transport system.

Germany-based Meiko Green Waste Solutions GmbH is a global technology and service company that manufactures and supplies professional food waste treatment systems for restaurants, hotels and community catering industries.

The LFC biodigester is a machine that digests food waste. These biodigesters are usually installed in commercial kitchens to reduce the expense, inconvenience and carbon footprint of food waste that otherwise would be hauled to a landfill.

Power Knot has 10 sizes of LFC biodigesters that process between 20 pounds and 6,600 pounds per day of food waste. With hundreds of installations globally, the LFC biodigester has proven to be a reliable, safe and cost-effective solution, Power Knot says.

Power Knot and Meiko have developed a waste system vacuum for the disposal of organic waste into a tank, which is automatically pumped into a biodigester. The LFC biodigester “eats” the food waste, converting it to gray water that is disposed of in a sewage system.

France-based Newrest has applied the system in Atlanta for the airline catering industry of which it is a part. The automated system can minimize manual labor and touch points typically needed for the disposal of waste into the biodigester and avoids the expense and messiness of hauling away the waste accumulated in the tank.

“The airline industry is currently facing major staffing issues. The combination of the Meiko and Power Knot systems reduces the amount of time and labor required to dispose of the food waste,” Power Knot President Iain Milnes says. “Newrest employees are empowered to focus on delivering quality service and care to the airline customers."

Fourth TEC Equipment location certified as Mack EV dealer

Mack Trucks dealer TEC Equipment has become a certified electric vehicle (EV) dealer at its Portland, Oregon, location. TEC is certified to service and support the Mack LR Electric refuse vehicle, and is the first Mack dealer in Oregon to achieve EV certification status.

This is the fourth TEC location to achieve this EV certification. The other three EV-certified TEC locations are in Fontana, La Mirada and Oakland, California. TEC also is working toward certifying its Dixon, California, dealership.

“Mack is pleased that our dealer partner, TEC Equipment, continues to invest in its dealerships in order to support all Mack customers, as well as those that are adding zero-emissions vehicles to their fleets,” says Jonathan Randall, president of Greensboro, North Carolina-based Mack Trucks North America. “TEC Equipment is an excellent example of industry players moving toward electrification, and Mack, together with our dealer partners, is at the forefront leading efforts toward sustainable transportation.”

To become EV-certified, dealers are required to meet numerous stringent safety, infrastructure, charging, tooling and training requirements. Mack executives work closely with dealer leadership to ensure all requirements are met before certification and that the transition is smooth.

“TEC Equipment is fully committed to being the best business partner for our customers who have either diesel or electric vehicles,” says Chris Thompson, TEC’s dealer principal. “We have chosen to become EV-certified so that we can support LR Electric customers in the Portland, Oregon, area. I’m extremely proud of our team in Portland, and our other EV-certified locations which have already met the challenge. We continue to see strong demand for our refuse vehicles, and we are consistently engaging with customers who are interested in electrification. TEC Equipment will continue to deliver the best in service and equipment to customers with Mack, who is as committed as TEC is to its customers.”

The 120,000-square-foot TEC Equipment-Portland site offers 25 service bays, one of which is dedicated to EVs. The Portland dealership has 20 technicians, 11 of whom are master technicians and four of whom are EV-certified.

TEC Equipment-Portland has more than $3 million in parts inventory and is a Certified Uptime Dealer.

Republic Services Inc., Phoenix, has announced plans to significantly expand its electric truck fleet through a long-term deal with Oshkosh Corp., an Oshkosh, Wisconsin-based truck manufacturer. It will begin operating two fully integrated electric recycling and waste truck prototypes this fall and expects electric vehicles to represent half of its new truck purchases in the next five years.

Republic operates a vocational fleet of 17,000 trucks, with electric collection trucks currently operating in two states. The company says it has made the industry’s largest commitment to fleet electrification through a multiple supplier-vendor strategy. Oshkosh’s McNeilus business unit is one of Republic’s longtime providers of recycling and waste collection truck bodies.

The chassis and body are designed as a single unit, maximizing interior space and creating a unique, streamlined exterior. Safety features include an enlarged windshield for improved visibility, 360-degree cameras, lane-departure sensors and automated braking.

“Republic Services is uniquely positioned to advance decarbonization through our commitment to electrification, delivering meaningful environmental and economic benefits,” company President and CEO Jon Vander Ark says. “Our engagement with Oshkosh on the truck of the future will accelerate the transition of our fleet while providing advanced safety features and technology.”

Two automated side-load prototypes for residential collections will hit the road in Phoenix this fall with additional vehicles hitting the road next year in Santa Ana and Carlsbad, California, and the Portland, Oregon, area.

The company set a goal to reduce absolute Scopes 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 35 percent by 2030 and says it is the only U.S. environmental services provider to have its emissions reduction target approved by the Science Based Targets initiative.
