DSNY to purchase seven Mack LR Electric refuse trucks

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) has announced plans to purchase seven LR Electric refuse models from Greensboro, North Carolina-based Mack Trucks. Once delivered, the trucks will operate in each of the city’s boroughs.

DSNY took delivery of its first fully electric refuse vehicle, a Mack LR Electric demonstration model, in September 2020 when it began rigorous real-world testing in Brooklyn. Since then, the department has been evaluating payload capacity, regenerative braking, overall vehicle performance, operating range and charging requirements.

“The DSNY order for an additional seven Mack LR Electric trucks speaks to the fact that the performance of the current LR Electric demonstrator model collecting in Brooklyn is meeting and even exceeding their expectations,” says Jonathan Randall, Mack Trucks senior vice president of sales and commercial operations. “Mack has long been the No. 1 choice of refuse customers, and we are now well-positioned to be the industry leader in e-mobility, as well. The Mack LR Electric is equipped with Mack’s integrated electric powertrain and will help New York City and DSNY achieve its zero-emissions goals.”

Known as the world’s largest municipal sanitation department, DSNY collects about 12,000 tons of refuse and recyclables daily with more than 6,000 vehicles, the majority of which are Mack trucks.

“We look forward to our continued partnership with Mack Trucks in striving toward our environmental efforts to benefit the citizens of New York City,” says DSNY Commissioner Edward Grayson. “The Mack LR Electric demonstrator is performing well, and we look forward to when we have one in each of our city’s zones.”

The seven battery-electric vehicles (BEV) will be located in the seven zones within New York City—the Bronx, Brooklyn North, Brooklyn South, Manhattan, Queens East, Queens West and Staten Island. DSNY will use a DC fast-charger to charge each of the LR Electric vehicles.

“New York City has set an ambitious goal of reducing GHG emissions by 100 percent by 2040,” says Rocco DiRico, deputy commissioner for support services at the New York City Department of Sanitation. “DSNY is purchasing these seven Mack LR Electric refuse vehicles in support of achieving our environmental objectives with a zero-emissions truck that is also extremely quiet.”

DSNY testing of the Mack LR Electric model remains ongoing. The DSNY Mack LR Electric demonstrator features twin 167-kW electric motors offering a combined output of 448 continuous horsepower and 4,051 pound-foot of torque available from zero RPM. The vehicle is spec’d with a two-speed Mack Powershift transmission and Mack’s proprietary S462R, 46,000-pound rear axles.

Four NMC (nickle manganese cobalt oxide) lithium-ion batteries, charged through a 150kW, SAE J1772-compliant charging system, offer vehicle propulsion and power for all onboard accessories, driven through 12V, 24V and 600V circuits. The three-mode regenerative braking system accounts for the refuse truck’s increasing load throughout the day and helps recapture energy from the hundreds of stops the vehicle makes each day, according to Mack.

Accent Wire Tie acquires Cavert Wire Co.

Accent Wire Tie, a large supplier of baling wire based in Houston, has acquired Cavert Wire Co., a North American manufacturer of baling wire. Cavert, founded in 1910, is based in Rural Hall, North Carolina.

“We are delighted to welcome Cavert to the Accent family,” says Bill Sims, president and CEO of Accent Wire Tie. “Cavert has an unmatched legacy of manufacturing quality baling wire and will bring an Accent-operated producing mill into the industry’s largest and most comprehensive supply chain. Cavert’s sales team and production facility are a great addition to Accent.”

According to a news release from Accent Wire Tie, this acquisition forms one of North America’s largest suppliers for baling wire products and bale packaging equipment. Additionally, the combined market presence enhances Accent’s ability to deliver products, equipment and service, the company says.

Connect Work Tools adds regional business manager

Connect Work Tools, a division of Exodus Global that is based in Superior, Wisconsin, has added Vaughn Ali to its team as a regional business manager for the Southeast. Ali has almost 20 years in the industry and most recently was the Southeast territory manager for Lockport, New York-based Moley Magnetics Inc.

Rubicon partners with XL Fleet Corp. for fleet electrification in waste and recycling industry

New York-based Rubicon, a software platform providing smart waste and recycling solutions to businesses and governments worldwide, has announced an agreement with XL Fleet Corp., a Boston-based company specializing in electrification solutions for commercial and municipal fleets, to bring XL Fleet’s offerings to Rubicon’s network of waste and recycling hauler partners.

According to a news release from Rubicon, the agreement will allow XL Fleet to grow its customer base by jointly approaching Rubicon’s partner network with the electrification-as-a-service offering. XL Fleet aims to provide hybrid electric, plug-in hybrid, and electric solutions while delivering charging infrastructure through its XL Grid division as a complete offering to Rubicon’s network across the United States. The agreement also creates an opportunity for infrastructure investors to deploy capital into a clean vehicle and charging infrastructure assets, the company says.

Rubicon says moving the Rubicon hauler network toward a zero-emissions future is a key goal for the company in the coming years, and the new agreement with XL Fleet is a critical step in meeting this objective.
