Services Provided: Sustainable innovations, such as generating electricity from renewable resources, biomass conversion and drinking water production
The publicly owned Abengoa, based in Seville, Spain, was founded in 1941 by engineers Javier Benjumea Puigcerver and Jose Manuel Abaurre Fernandez-Pasalagua who were interested in developing innovative electrical assembly projects in Spain.
Today, Abengoa continues to develop such solutions relating to renewable energy, biomass conversion and the production of drinking water from sea water. The company says it hopes to be a world reference in the development of sustainable and innovative technology solutions.
With more than 75 offices and facilities around the globe, each of its respective business units are working on new opportunities to bring more sustainable energy solutions to market.
Abengoa’s corporate communications group says 2014 and 2015 have been particularly productive for the company, and here they share details on some of these ventures:
Q: What new projects have you been focusing on this year?
A: This past year, Abengoa Bioenergy has focused on bringing our cellulosic ethanol facility in Hugoton, Kansas, to full capacity (up to 25 million gallons and 21 megawatts). We announced an exciting new partnership with Toshiba, building a biomass plant in the United Kingdom, and another project constructing the Sierra Biorefinery project in Nevada. In both instances, Abengoa will serve as the builder and operator. The company also is pursuing partnerships with local municipalities to provide environmentally friendly solutions for solving solid waste issues by reducing the amount of garbage going to landfills and supporting waste diversion and decreased greenhouse gas emissions goals.
Q: What makes you different from your competitors?
A: Abengoa has proven that its ability to offer end-to-end solutions is a driving factor in developing industry relationships and securing new ventures.
We continue to challenge existing thoughts on renewable technologies through conducting innovative research and development. As we continue to pursue opportunities that widen the reach of renewables, we hope to see global governments encourage the use of sustainable energy.
