Continuity of service

When Waste Today’s parent company, GIE Media, acquired MSW Management magazine in July 2023, our publisher, Jim Keefe, pledged to honor and integrate the MSW brand going forward.

The publication, under founder Dan Waldman and longtime editorial director John Trotti, had built a reputation around its coverage of the solid waste industry, particularly on the technical aspects of landfill development and management. “We are proud to be its new stewards,” Keefe said in his column announcing the acquisition.

Earlier this year, as part of that promise, Waste Today launched a dedicated e-newsletter tailored to the landfill sector. The MSW Management Landfill Report hits inboxes on the third Wednesday of each month and offers ongoing coverage of landfill openings and expansions, industry regulations and landfill trends and products. Now, this edition of The MSW Management Landfill Supplement marks Waste Today’s dedication to continuing to serve the broad-based informational and business needs of industry stakeholders, providing the industry-specific coverage with which the MSW brand had been synonymous.

Longtime MSW readers will see a familiar face—Neal Bolton, president of Blue Ridge Services, a Hamilton, Montana-based solid waste consulting company, is back with an updated iteration of his popular Landfill Manager’s Notebook column. His new column, Landfill Insights, launches with this month’s landfill supplement, and future columns will be published each month in our Landfill Report e-newsletter. In his inaugural column for Waste Today, Bolton explores the theory of the “desire path” and how it can be applied to maximize operating hours at waste management facilities.

Our cover story, "Community effort," offers an extensive behind-the-scenes look at what goes into developing a new landfill project, from the search for the right property to the yearslong permitting process to successful community engagement. Green Group Holdings, the development group behind the 130 Environmental Park near Austin, Texas, walks us through the experience from start to finish, with plenty of practical advice for how the messaging around landfills can be adapted to meet the unique demands of the social media age.

The issue covers end-of-life considerations for landfills, as well, with a deep dive into the logistics of transforming a closed landfill from a liability to an asset through the installation of a solar plant—a hot topic at this year’s Sustainability Operations Action Resources (SOAR) event hosted by Silver Spring, Maryland-based Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA).
